Mele_HTPC_20121220_V1.3 en_US img+sdcard version

2 versions:
- 1 flasheable using PhoenixTools here: Mele_HTPC_20121220_V1.3_en_US_Apex.img
         or dd-able image: Mele_HTPC_20121220_V1.3_en_US_Apex.ddimg.bz2
- 1 SDCard version: sdcard_Mele_HTPC_20121220_V1.3.tar.bz2.
Choose your flavor...

Next, you can install gapps.
You just have to put in /mnt/sdcard the gapps .zip file found here: gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip, and reboot (download from a PC, put it on a external sdcard, copy with the file manager).

The script in /etc/init.d (here: 10update_gapps) will scan at boot and install gapps if present.

In the case of SDCard version, you have to put the gapps zip file in the last partition (named UDISK, /dev/sdx10)

In details, what is modified in this firmware from the original version (Mele_HTPC_家庭版_20121220_正式版_v1.3):
- boot defaults to en_US
- deactivated /system/lib/hw/sensors.exDroid.so (fixes 100% system_server bug)
- added /etc/init.d capability
- added capability to install gapps if zip present in /mnt/sdcard, by a /etc/init.d script
- added APEX Launcher as default launcher (found here: Apex Launcher)
- added Andrew patch 2.0.apk as preinstalled app (found here: http://bbs.mele.cn/showtopic-855.aspx)
- added ES Explorer as preinstalled app (found here: Download)
- added xpad.ko module (found here: MELE A1000 Hacking - XBOX 360 controller support in 3.0.8 kernel)

Specifically in the SDCard version:
- tuned /etc/vold.fstab so that sdcard is correctly mounted.
- in first partition, you will find uEnv_recovery.txt that boots on the SDCard, recovery mode. Just replace in the first partition uEnv.txt by uEnv_recovery.txt and you will boot into recovery. Replace by uEnv_normal.txt and you will boot in normal mode.
- added recovery partition (/dev/sdX7)

  3. Hi Thierry. Just tried out your SDCard version on a 4GB SDcard and it works well. I only have a class 4 card for now so it's a bit slow. Anyhow, I can't get GAPPS to install even if I drop it on UDISK as you stated above. Looking at you 10update_gapps, I see the following,

    GAPPS_ZIP=`$BUSYBOX find /mnt/sdcard/ -name 'gapps*zip'`

This would suggest to me that the script in only searching for GAPPS on the SDCard. Is this why it isn't working on UDISK. How do I correct this? Thanks.

    2. I created the setup to work for a 8GB SDCard.
If you want to create the same for a 4GB SDCard, you can modify the parameters before launching the "make" command, by changing values in partitions.txt.
data (partition #5) can be reduced, UDISK (partition #10) can be reduced.

  4. Hello Thierry, just wanted to say thank you for this. I don't know if it's a big work for all that crap coming from mele company. I can't understand how that could be considered as a finished product with all that crap!

I was able to install latest version of netflix (something I was unable to produce with sooner version of the Mele). It seems also a little bit more faster. I hope it's coming from the updated driver of Mele.

I was maybe lucky, I used a 8 gig card for my setup :)

    1. I got a small issue, coming from the lasted installation. It doesn't bother me but just letting you know if you can do something about it. I used the AUDIO_CODEC for my sound since I output it to my home theater system. This was working pretty well before but with the latest release I noticed it was coming always back to the AUDIO_HDMI really really often, I could not tell you when or why it came back to it, but it was and it was really annoying.

Did you see something about that?

    2. No, but well I never reboot the device (or just to test that the google apps installation does not break the boot process), and never change the audio output...
Is it after a reboot or does it change while playing a video?

    3. Can you try the SoundAbout app? Seems that you can force the audio output to "Wired earphones" that may correspond to the stereo RCA output.
I saw that unplugging and plugging again HDMI reverts my settings to AUDIO_HDMI.
When I use SoundAbout, AUDIO_CODEC stays checked.

FireAir allows the Mele device to act as a UPnP MediaRenderer.
I have a NAS server running Mediatomb UPnP server. On my Android mobile phone, using BubbleUPnP I browse video/audio files and play them from my Mediatomb server on the Mele device. Very useful for music, no need to power on the TV to play files.

    1. The installer script runs only at boot, so you need to reboot once .zip copied into /mnt/sdcard/.
The installer, once update done, creates an empty file: /data/system.gapps_updated so that it does not install again the Gapps.

Do you see this file: /data/system.gapps_updated ?
(use ES Explorer and set default directory to '/' in settings)
If so, please remove it and reboot.
If not, please check that you have in /mnt/sdcard/ a file named gapps*.zip (no matter if it is gapps.zip or gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip, or gapps-to-install.zip, but beginning by "gapps" and ending by "zip").
The file must be in /mnt/sdcard or in a subtree of /mnt/sdcard (/mnt/sdcard/Downloads/gapps.zip works).

    7. Interesting, drynish. Can you tell us on which firmware version you have?
I tested the /dev/uinput device driver and seems to work.
I took the example given at the end of this page: http://thiemonge.org/getting-started-with-uinput
      replaced "/dev/input/uinput" by "/dev/uinput".
The link to the compiled version here:
      http://www.4shared.com/file/YCjk1zpS/uinput-sample.html

When running, this program makes move the mouse cursor randomly.

Since this app is network related, could it be an issue due to a firewall, or other ? I don't know, but /dev/uinput works at least for the mouse.

And I found out that another app is using /dev/uinput:
      #lsof |busybox grep uinput
      com.mele. 3286 system 41 ??? ??? ??? ??? /dev/uinput
      #busybox ps|busybox grep 3286
      3286 1000 com.mele.Control

For CM10, the main showstopper is the lack of HW decoding as-is. There is a workaround using BubbleUPnP but that's a regression from my point of view. I managed to run a CM10 version, I cannot remember which one. I could try again...

Currently I am trying to run this: http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/40980-42-for-allwinner/page__view__findpost__p__705330
This guy has build CM10.1 (Android 4.2) for Allwinner A10.
Already I tested almost successfully a Jellybean firmware:
      http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/58682-rom-jellybean-411-for-sanei-n10-single-core-with-hwa-support/
But beware: Ethernet needs to be activated manually, and script.bin must be changed before use. H/W cceleration is OK, mp4 seek works, A/V sync issue disappears.

    4. It seems almost impossible to be done easily?

Why couldn't just burn an img to an sdcard and use it to flash the image?

      Michel ;)

  31. Hello Thierry!

I downloaded the below image from one of your sites and flashed my device.
    mele_4.0_v1.3beta_revised_en_us_4.ddimg

It worked pretty good with no problem at all.
I then turned off the unit and started again ( re-boot ) and now it is stuck on Mele logo. I tried to reboot couple of time but no luck.

Any idea what to do with out reflashing? I f I do reflash the how to fix this reboot issue?

    Thanks.

    1. Well, this firmware has been updated: http://tmerle.blogspot.fr/2013/02/melehtpc20121220v131-enus-imgsdcard.html
As far as I remember, this firmware was working pretty well... even with gapps installed. Strange that you get such an issue.

And there is also a new version named "2.0" (see recent posts). The 2.0.1 has 1 bug on xvid videos, I am waiting for the 2.0.2 that fixes it.

  32. Hello Thierry!

I have been trying to use your images but having problem loading the gapps as you mentioned.

added capability to install gapps if zip present in /mnt/sdcard, by a /etc/init.d script

You say if gapps is present in /mnt/sdcard, is this means external SD card or do I have to put the file in the tablet's flash memory at /mnt/sdcard?

Please clarify as I am not getting this loaded during reboot.

    Thanks.

    1. Yes, you must put the gapps.zip in /mnt/sdcard (device's flash memory), and reboot; the script will install gapps automatically and reboot again the device.
